			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This is a Hubble Space Telescope wallpaper of a vast nebula called NGC 604, which lies in the neighboring spiral galaxy M33, located 2.7 million light-years away in the constellation Triangulum.</p>

<p>This is a site where new stars are being born in a spiral arm of the galaxy. Though such nebulae are common in galaxies, this one is particularly large, nearly 1,500 light-years across. The nebula is so vast it is easily seen in ground-based telescopic images (left). At the heart of NGC 604 are over 200 hot stars, much more massive than our Sun (15 to 60 solar masses). They heat the gaseous walls of the nebula making the gas fluoresce. Their light also highlights the nebula&#8217;s three-dimensional shape, like a lantern in a cavern. By studying the physical structure of a giant nebula, astronomers may determine how clusters of massive stars affect the evolution of the interstellar medium of the galaxy. The nebula also yields clues to its star formation history and will improve understanding of the starburst process when a galaxy undergoes a &#8220;firestorm&#8221; of star formation. The image was taken on January 17, 1995 with Hubble&#8217;s Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2. Separate exposures were taken in different colors of light to study the physical properties of the hot gas (17,000 degrees Fahrenheit, 10,000 degrees Kelvin</p>

<p>It is  associated with the Centaurus cluster, one of the most massive  assemblages of galaxies in the nearby universe.   The Local Group of galaxies, of which the Milky Way is a member, is  moving in the direction of Centaurus at a speed of more than a million  miles an hour under the influence of the gravitational pull of the  matter in that direction. Clusters of young bright blue stars highlight  the galaxy&#8217;s spiral arms. In contrast, red giant stars in the process  of dying are also found. Only the very brightest stars in NGC 4603 can  be seen individually, even with the unmatched ability of the Hubble  Space Telescope to obtain detailed images of distant objects. Much of  the diffuse glow comes from fainter stars that cannot be individually  distinguished by Hubble. The reddish filaments are regions where clouds  of dust obscure blue light from the stars behind them.   This galaxy was observed by a team affiliated with the HST Key Project  on the Extragalactic Distance Scale. Because NGC 4603 is much farther  away than the other galaxies studied with Hubble by the Key Project  team, 108 million light-years, its stars appear very faint from the  Earth, and so accurately measuring their brightness, as is required for  distinguishing the characteristic variations of Cepheids, is extremely  difficult. Determining the distance to the galaxy required an  unprecedented statistical analysis based on extensive computer  simulations.</p>

<p>To the upper left of center is the evolved blue supergiant called Sher  25. The star has a unique circumstellar ring of glowing gas that is a  galactic twin to the famous ring around the supernova 1987A. The  grayish-bluish color of the ring and the bipolar outflows (blobs to the  upper right and lower left of the star) indicates the presence of  processed (chemically enriched) material. Near the center of the view  is a so-called starburst cluster dominated by young, hot Wolf-Rayet  stars and early O-type stars. A torrent of ionizing radiation and fast  stellar winds from these massive stars has blown a large cavity around  the cluster.   The most spectacular evidence for the interaction of ionizing radiation  with cold molecular-hydrogen cloud material are the giant gaseous  pillars to the right of the cluster. These pillars are sculptured by  the same physical processes as the famous pillars Hubble photographed  in the M16 Eagle Nebula. Dark clouds at the upper right are so-called  Bok globules, which are probably in an earlier stage of star formation.  To the lower left of the cluster are two compact, tadpole-shaped  emission nebulae. Similar structures were found by Hubble in Orion, and  have been interpreted as gas and dust evaporation from possibly  protoplanetary disks (proplyds).   This true-color picture was taken on March 5, 1999 with the Wide Field  Planetary Camera 2.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Space Shuttle Atlantis blazes through the night sky to begin the STS-86  mission, slated to be the seventh of nine planned dockings of the Space Shuttle  with the Russian Space Station Mir. Liftoff on September 25 from Launch Pad 39A  was at 10:34 p.m. EDT, within seconds of the preferred time, during a six  minute,  45 second launch window.</p>

<p>The 10 day flight will include the transfer of the sixth U.S. astronaut to live  and work aboard the Mir. After the docking, STS-86 Mission Specialist David A.  Wolf will become a member of the Mir 24 crew, replacing astronaut C. Michael  Foale, who will return to Earth aboard Atlantis with the remainder of the STS-86  crew. Foale has been on the Russian Space Station since mid May. Wolf is  scheduled to remain there about four months. Besides Wolf (embarking to Mir) and  Foale (returning), the STS-86 crew includes Commander James D. Wetherbee, Pilot  Michael J. Bloomfield, and Mission Specialists Wendy B. Lawrence, Scott E.  Parazynski, Vladimir Georgievich Titov of the Russian Space Agency, and  Jean-Loup J.M. Chretien of the French Space Agency, CNES.   Other primary objectives of the mission are a spacewalk by Parazynski and Titov,  and the exchange of about 3.5 tons of science/logistical equipment and supplies  between Atlantis and the Mir.</p>

NASA&#8217;s Galaxy Evolution Explorer had a &#8220;ringside&#8221; seat for this feeding frenzy, using its ultraviolet eyes to study the process from beginning to end.</p>

<p>The artist&#8217;s concept chronicles the star being ripped apart and swallowed by the cosmic beast over time. First, the intact sun-like star (left) ventures too close to the black hole, and its own self-gravity is overwhelmed by the black hole&#8217;s gravity. The star then stretches apart (middle yellow blob) and eventually breaks into stellar crumbs, some of which swirl into the black hole (cloudy ring at right). This doomed material heats up and radiates light, including ultraviolet light, before disappearing forever into the black hole. The Galaxy Evolution Explorer was able to watch this process unfold by observing changes in ultraviolet light.</p>
<p>The area around the black hole appears warped because the gravity of the black hole acts like a lens, twisting and distorting light.</p>
